Hepatic lesions may be treated with resection, transplantation, thermal ablation, chemoembolisation or systemic therapy depending on histology, stage and liver function.
Irreversible electroporation has been studied when tumours abut large vessels or bile ducts where thermal ablation might undertreat the edge or risk stricture. It is not a first-line option for all metastases; multidisciplinary liver meeting input is standard.
Radiofrequency, microwave and cryoablation remain common when geometry allows an adequate ablation margin. Stereotactic body radiation therapy may compete or combine depending on diagnosis.
See IRE (NanoKnife) for a plain-language description of the electroporation mechanism.
You can ask for a second opinion on imaging, diagnosis and treatment options before you decide.
